It’s that time again! As summer starts to come to a close and all of the stores start talking about back to school. I like to talk about Disney World for BIG KIDS/Adults only trips! Fall is the BEST time to get in those big kid trips! With kids going back to school around Labor Day and parents not often willing to take kids out of school, you can enjoy some incredibly low crowds. In previous years both September and October were the best months but now October has become a popular travel times with many “fall breaks” falling sometime in October!
Whenever you choose to go to Disney World, adults trips can be incredibly fun and full of unique opportunities that are more geared toward adults. Contrary to popular belief, Disney doesn’t throw characters in your face! You have so many opportunities that you wouldn’t have with kids traveling with you!
With lower cost per person, you can splurge and spend a little more on things like deluxe accommodations or my favorite club level service (it’s by far the best experience we’ve had in Disney and continue to return again and again. Club level brings the experience to the top of the luxurious experience Disney has to offer. In addition to deluxe accommodations, you are given access to special level of the resort of your choice (often one of the top floors), and provides you with more one on one attention and includes help making your dining reservations and making other resorts during your stay. What my family finds most helpful is the on site assistance. Yes, I know a lot, but there are some things that I like suggestions on – like what’s the fastest way to get to Polynesian from Wilderness Lodge and if it’s possible to adjust the time of an existing dining reservation within 24 hours without incurring the $10 per person cancelation fee (it is!) Additionally, you’ll receive food on site which is included in the cost of your room. For us, it’s worth it. Enough food for breakfast to fill our bellies before heading to the parks (and a heck of a time saver), all of the high end coffee I can drink, soft drinks, milk, tea, water, and more. Dinner time brings hot and cold appetizers as well as beer and wine and late evening brings after dinner cordials and dessert. It’s a truly great way to end a night.
If deluxe accommodations or club level isn’t for you, maybe the deluxe dining plan is! It’s something that might be hard when traveling with kids whether it’s because it’s too much time for kids to sit down or you can’t fill your credits or you have picky eaters who don’t like the menu of signature dining. Deluxe dining is best served by using 2 credit dining experiences coupled with a single credit breakfast or early lunch (or sharing a breakfast and a lunch and doing a 2 credit dinner). Lots of options with deluxe dining and you can use later hours for dinner (with less kids to worry about once you hit the 9 pm hour).
Whether it’s deluxe dining, standard dining, or no dining – some of the best ways to enjoy dining is Epcot’s Food & Wine Festival. A culinary adventure in a single theme park. Let your taste buds enjoy all sorts of flavors. With lots of unique options available and lots of walking around World Showcase, it’s more geared toward those big kids. Unique opportunities for little kids as well, but definitely more of an adult style experience.
Lets go into the parks…can you say thrill rides? Adults can enjoy everything Disney has to offer from the “family coaster” Seven Dwarfs Mine Train all the way up to the biggest thrills of Rock n Roller Coaster and Mission: SPACE. No limitations on height requirements – just guts! Trust me, I don’t have them!!
The biggest thing for me…TIME! You can enjoy extended park hours and spending the most amount of time in each park. No need to take long nap breaks (unless you’d like one!) That means more times for rides, dining, and fun.
On adults trips there’s also unique opportunities that are even age specific. Tours like Keys to the Kingdom are age 16+ and there is a single dining experience: Victoria & Albert’s which only allows adults. These unique opportunities allow you to truly have a big kid feel and takes you away from the kid-centric Disney World experience.
While Disney is making Downtown Disney to Disney Springs – a more family friendly experience, there are still lounges, dinner, and nightlife available for adults. Around 7 pm, things start to get busy in the area, so plan accordingly for both traffic (while construction continues in the area), and guests leave the parks for dinner reservations and additional shopping.
Don’t try and stay away from all of the characters! We often say a quick hello to Mickey during our stay (it all started with a Mouse, you know!) It doesn’t need to get as intense as a character meal, but a quick meet and greet can be a fun memory! My favorite is a quick stop at Mickey at Town Square Theater in Magic Kingdom. Mickey can actually talk and say hello to you.
